In Ethiopia, smallholder farming dominates the agricultural landscape, accounting for over 96% of agricultural land and serving as the primary driver of rural livelihoods and national Gross Domestic Product [GDP]. This review examines the determinants of smallholder commercialization, explores its socioeconomic and environmental impacts, identifies key challenges, and suggests policy options for Ethiopia. This review is based on a systematic search and thematic synthesis of literature addressing smallholder agricultural commercialization, its determinants, socioeconomic impacts, and associated constraints, with a specific focus on Ethiopia. This research was anchored in Agricultural Household Models (AHM), Market Non-Separability, New Institutional Economics (NIE) and Transaction Cost Theories. Literature published between (1995–2020) The literature cited in this review in between a 25-year period, representing the evolution of agricultural commercialization from a broad structural adjustment concept to a localized, multi-dimensional development strategy. The review reveals that smallholder commercialization is shaped by a combination of internal household-specific factors (such as asset endowments, land size, education, and labor) and external institutional factors (including market infrastructure, policies, transaction costs, and agro-climatic conditions). While the transition to commercialized farming generally enhances household income, welfare, and food security, it also introduces complex challenges regarding gender equity, health risks, and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the efficacy of the commercialization process remains constrained by poor rural infrastructure, climate variability, and limited access to credit and modern inputs. To overcome these barriers, this review paper highlights the need for targeted policy interventions, including upgrading rural infrastructure, expanding cluster-based farming, enhancing access to market information, facilitating agricultural credit, and promoting gender-sensitive technologies to ensure inclusive and sustainable market integration. This review recommends an improvement for smallholder farmers to access institutional facilities like upgrading rural infrastructure, expanding cluster-based farming, enhancing access to market information, facilitating agricultural credit, and promoting gender-sensitive technologies.
