Influence of project planning practices on success of malaria prevention and control intervention project in Kirehe District, Rwanda

This study examined the influence of project planning practices on the success of malaria prevention and control intervention projects in Kirehe District, Rwanda. The study specifically assessed the influence of project resource planning practices, risk planning practices, stakeholder planning practices, and monitoring and evaluation planning practices on project success. The study was guided by Resource-Based View Theory, Stakeholder Theory, Systems Theory and Theory of Constraints. A descriptive and correlational research design was adopted using both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The study population consisted of 352 respondents involved in malaria prevention and control programs, from which a representative sample of 187 was selected using Slovin’s formula. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and document review methods. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 29 through descriptive and inferential statistics including correlation and regression analysis, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The coefficient findings showed that project resource planning had a positive and significant influence on success of Malaria Prevention and Control Intervention Project in Kirehe District, Rwanda (B = 0.247, t = 5.744, p = 0.000). Risk planning also had a positive and significant influence on project success (B = 0.342, t = 6.706, p = 0.000), while stakeholder planning positively and significantly influenced project success (B = 0.231, t = 4.620, p = 0.000). Monitoring and evaluation planning had a positive and significant influence on project success (B = 0.174, t = 2.900, p = 0.004). The study concluded that project planning practices significantly improved the success of Malaria Prevention and Control Intervention Project in Kirehe District, and recommended that project authorities strengthen integrated resource planning, risk planning, stakeholder planning, and monitoring and evaluation planning to improve efficiency, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability of malaria prevention interventions.
